WATCH PARTY: This Is Not a Burial [...] (2019) L.J. Mosese @ Richard Tucker Lib
Details
Trying to get an acclaimed film by an African director on the schedule, but the 80 character limit in the Meetup title bar is giving me difficulties.
MOVIE NAME: This Is Not a Burial, It's a Resurrection (2019)
DIRECTOR: Lemohang Jeremiah Mosese
RUNTIME: 120 minutes
SYNOPSIS (via Criterion.com): With a poet’s eye for place, light, and the spiritual dimensions of everyday existence, Lemohang Jeremiah Mosese crafts a meditation on the concept of homeland and a transcendent elegy for what is lost in the name of progress. Grieving and alone following the deaths of her husband and children, elderly Mantoa (Mary Twala Mhlongo, in a soul-shaking end-of-life performance) prepares for her own death and to be buried alongside her ancestors. When plans for a new dam near her village in the landlocked kingdom of Lesotho threaten to literally wash away all she holds dear, Mantoa takes a last stand, mobilizing her neighbors to fight for their land and their way of life. The experience of watching Mosese’s visionary, much-lauded THIS IS NOT A BURIAL, IT’S A RESURRECTION is as timeless and elemental as the land itself.
BLURBS:
"Nothing short of miraculous. In fact, 'This Is Not a Burial, It’s a Resurrection' is as unforgettable as any film I’ve ever seen." - Wael Khairy, *RogerEbert.com*
"A haunted, unsentimental paean to land and its physical containment of community and ancestry — all endangered by nominally progressive infrastructure — this arresting third feature from Lesotho-born writer-director Lemohang Jeremiah Mosese is as classical in theme as it is adventurous in presentation." - Guy Lodge, Variety
"Director Lemohang Jeremiah Mosese is coolly unsentimental and realistic about the inevitable march of capitalism and construction. Weaving in ideas around displacement, collective identity and history, this film takes on almost mythic qualities." - Cath Clarke, The Guardian
