New Year's Day Group Walk in Asheville with 7 KM and 10 KM Options
Details
We are joining the Asheville Amblers Walking Club, Stryder, AARP, and perhaps some others, for this walk. Dress for the weather.
There are some hills and stairs, but this walk is nearly all on pavement. Tennis shoes are fine, but some may want walking sticks. This walk would not be good for wheelchairs and would be rather difficult for strollers. Dogs on leash would be ok.
As always, bring water and a protein snack.
Enjoy portions of the Urban Trail through the vibrant art deco downtown and the ambience of a designated "All American City". Visit the Grove Arcade with shops and restaurants to depict its original uniqueness as an indoor shopping mall back in the 1920s. Walk by the Thomas Wolfe Home, well known author of Look Homeward, Angel and You Can't Go Home Again. Visit several old neighborhoods of Asheville and the Greenway along Reed Creek. Meander through the historic Montford District with old homes and B&Bs. Ramble through Riverside Cemetery where O. Henry (author of "The Gift of the Magi") and Thomas Wolfe are buried.
We will register at 12:30 in the parking lot behind the Asheville Chamber of Commerce Visitors Center. The Visitors Center will be closed, so we suggest taking care of any personal needs just prior to arrival.
The walk is free, although donations to the Amblers would be accepted ($4 suggested). Step-off will be at 1:00. Choose between a 7 KM/4 mile and a 10 KM/6 mile version of the walk. The walk will be guided by experienced group walking leaders.
