Join us for a Game of Hygge!
WHAT IS HYGGE?
HYGGE is pronounced "Hhue ga", or any way you want to say it!
This is more than a party game, it is a cultural concept to bring more happiness into the world.
Etymology:
Hygge is purported to come from a word, originating from the times when Denmark and Norway were one Kingdom in 1397. The original word means well-being. It also may originate from the word hug, to embrace. It also means to create comfort and to create a mood.
The purpose of Hygge is about bringing together community, making a cozier space and creating more intimacy when friends— when peeps— get together.
It’s about COZINESS, WARMTH, TOGETHERNESS!
It's not a processing group, it's not talking about what's not good in your lives, it's about bringing people together and talking about cozy subjects that make us feel good
A little cultural context:
Denmark has dark weather days from October to March, 180 days of rain and very cold. So people come together in Hygge in these winter months and support each other in cozy groups.
It includes:
- Atmosphere and special low lighting, such as candles
- Presence, turn off the phone
- Pleasure such as coffee, chocolate cookies, cake and candy
- Equality, no competition, it's the “we” over the “me”, share tasks and airtime
- Gratitude, take it in, this might be as good as it gets
- Comfort, take a break, it's all about relaxation
TOGETHERNESS BUILDS RELATIONSHIPS AND NARRATIVES AND COMMON HISTORY OF ACTIVITIES
- Harmony, no drama, let's discuss politics another day
- Shelter: this is your tribe. This is a place of peace and security
While Hygge can be an intangible and abstract concept, I do believe we can use all our senses to detect it. IT HAS A TASTE, A SOUND, A SMELL AND TEXTURE and hopefully you will start to see hygge all around. It's about taking your time, feeling safe, and an indication that you trust the ones you are with and where you are containing the feeling of pleasure and coziness.
How to play the Hygge game:
On your turn, draw a card and answer one of its questions. Not feeling any of them? Simply pick another card!
Hygge is both a noun and a verb! Come join us! Let’s HYGGE!
We'll start at 45 South Cafe for coffee or tea, and a treat. Then, weather permitting, we will go to the park across the street to enjoy our beautiful fall weather. This will be a lot of fun!
In loving synergy,
Tia & Brigitte
And in the true spirit of Hygge: Kindly RSVP, and if your plans change, please update your RSVP so someone else can join. Spaces are limited.
