Utah High Point Series Part 13: Deseret Peak (Tooele County)

Details

HIKE DESCRIPTIONS: This hike is part of an ongoing series to visit the high point in each of the 29 counties in Utah. For the 13th part of this series, on Saturday, July 12, we will travel out to Tooele County and hike Deseret Peak. Our aim is to do the Deseret Peak Wilderness Loop, which is 8.3 miles, with 3800 ft. of elevation gain. If, however, our pace getting to the peak is slower than anticipated or if there are reports of snow still on the north side of the peak, we may do it as an out and back, using the Mill Fork Canyon Trail/clockwise half of the loop. This would make for a 7.8-mile hike with 3600 ft of elevation gain and less scrambling and route-finding. Speaking of snow, bring spikes just in case (I will update about trail reports closer to the event). Here is the Alltrails page and the Roadtrip Ryan High Point page for Deseret Peak:

ATTENDEE CAP: This hike is withing the Deseret Peak Wilderness Area. There is a group size limit of 10 people per hiking group: Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest | Wilderness | Forest Service (feel free to complain about this to the USFS, not to me). Thus, I am initially limiting the attendee cap to 10 people. If the event fills, I will try my best to locate a second organizer who can take a second group either 15 minutes later or in the opposite direction around the loop. If you sign up and are willing to lead a second group, please let me know. Because of the attendee cap, priority will be given based on the Number of High Point Events Attended. Thus, while you might be on the "going" list initially, you may get moved to the waitlist depending on who else signs up.

TRAVEL & MEETING INFO: The trailhead is a little over an hour from Salt Lake City. Thus, if interested and to make parking easier, we can look at carpooling from the downtown area or from a spot west of downtown. We would likely meet around 6:30 a.m., depending on the exact location. Alternatively, if you want to arrive the night before, there are several campgrounds on the road to the trailhead. When signing up for the event, please respond to the question about whether you would like to carpool. Once I know who wants to carpool, I'll pick a rally point and exact time.
