📌Awaawaroa peninsula, Waiheke island

Details

On Sunday the 25th of May, we are going to Waiheke Island, by ferry for a day hike of the area around Awaawaroa peninsula (pronounced Awa-awa-roa). This hike is about 14.5km in distance, and about 75% is coastal, which will be rocky terrain or sandy beaches. It also includes a side trip to Waiheke island's highest point - Maunganui Hill at 231m, and is slightly lower than Rangitoto island. We will take a 30 minute charter bus to Awaawaroa Road end, for the start walk, and then make our way to the coast. Most of the coast is reasonably accessible although there could be some slightly difficult parts, with no formed track and some swampy ground. When we get back to the start we will take the charter bus back to Matiatia ferry terminal.
For those new to Hiking Aotearoa - a hint - you will need to read the description before RSVP' ing

If you are slow and unfit, then this event is probably not suitable for you. New members are welcome! This will be a great day of adventure to a beautiful part of Waiheke island that few people get to see. You are likely to get your shoes wet, and possibly up to your waist. There are limited spaces available.

You can buy a ferry ticket from the Matiatia to the CBD on the day, but it is recommended that you pre purchase this ferry ticket if you do not have a HOP card. If driving to the start, parking is limited in the CBD even on Sunday. My recommendation is to park in the Downtown carpark which is adjacent to the Downtown ferry terminal. Otherwise you could take a bus or train, but try to arrive with lots of time to spare, otherwise we will go without you.
If possible, please use the toilet on the ferry, as last time we went to Waiheke island more than half the group used them when we arrived at the ferry terminal, while the bus driver waited for them.

🍔🍺 After the hike (optional): The Brit Pub & Eatery 122 Quay St, CBD

❌❗RSVP question: To make sure you have (or attempted to) read the description - What is a good time to arrive at the Downtown ferry terminal?
