What we’re about
This group will be hiking regularly in the area of Southern Rhode Island (Exeter, Charlestown, Westerly, etc.), and occasionally beyond!
This group was made for people who love to hike, and may be members of other hiking Meetup groups, but cannot routinely drive up to the hikes in Northern Rhode Island on busy weekdays.

This will be a 5.5-mile hike that includes the trails within the RI Veterans Memorial Cemetery on 280 acres and the Queen's River Preserve on another 188 acres in Exeter, RI.The grounds of the cemetery are beautifully maintained and include more than 40 monuments dedicated to veterans of specific wars and conflicts. Within perimeter area of the cemetery grounds are the woodland trails created by the URI Master Gardeners back in the 90's. Most of hike through the cemetery will be along the woodland trails with opportunities to visit some of the monuments.
The cemetery grounds are directly next to the Queen's River Preserve for an additional 2-miles of hiking to one of Rhode Island’s most pristine rivers. The Queen’s River—cold and largely forested—forms the western boundary of the preserve.
Old town roads now serve as wide, flat hiking trails that wind through tall pine woods, some charred as a result of a fire in 2023. Highlights include a historic cemetery, views of the Queen’s River, and a long, open hayfield that is actively managed by a local farmer. Two small stone foundations lie just off the main trail, hidden in plain sight. The trails here are mostly flat with some moderate inclines.
