The Wellness Syndrome - Book Club Meeting
Details
Hi guys,
Let's convene in 2 weeks time to discuss the book, "The Wellness Syndrome" by Carl Cedestrom and Andre Spicer.
The book discusses modern society's obsession with wellness and health. It argues that wellness has become an ideology that limits freedom and leads people to feel anxious. It asserts that society now equates health with morality, judging those who are unhealthy as bad people. Companies promote wellness programs not out of care for employees but to shift responsibility for work stress onto individuals and push people to work more. Politicians have also used wellness rhetoric to justify cuts to social programs. Overall, it critically examines the downsides of an obsessive focus on health and wellness in contemporary society.
