Book of the Month: Experimental Film by Gemma Files.
Book Summary
After being fired and learning her son has autism, Lois Cairns, a burned-out film critic, finds herself drowning in self-doubt and bitterness. Everything changes the night she stumbles on a snippet of eerie, long-lost silent film that hints at the work of Mrs. A. Macalla Whitcomb, an eccentric early 1900s socialite who mysteriously disappeared.Driven by the promise of uncovering Canada’s first female filmmaker, Lois throws herself into the mystery, only to discover that Whitcomb’s ghostly legacy is both dangerous and deeply entangled with her own life. As she investigates, Lois is haunted by disturbing visions, crumbling mental health, and the chilling sense that something supernatural is watching, and following her. Her obsession soon blurs the line between film and reality, putting her family, especially her vulnerable son, in peril.
Now, Lois must face a creeping horror that is equal parts lost folklore and waking nightmare. A force determined to step out of the shadows and into the light, no matter the cost.
You can check the trigger warnings at the bottom, or dive in blind if you prefer a surprise.
Don’t worry if you haven’t finished the book, we’ll start by chatting about whatever spooky (or not-so-spooky) reads we’re enjoying before diving into the featured title. Come for the eerie atmosphere, stay for the lively conversations and, of course, the cats, because let’s be honest, that’s why you’re really here, isn’t it?
Questions? Feel free to drop a comment or message me (Gonzalo) for more details. Hope to see you there!
