Veteran's Day Hike!!! Beacon Crash Site...
Details
If you would like to be patriotic for Veteran's Day we have a hike for you. It is on the Fishkill Ridge and visits a very special place where a plane crashed 80 years ago. It is a moment and a place to remember our fallen heroes.
On the way up at about the 1000 feet above sea level mark we will encounter a plaque that denotes the spot where an airplane crashed 80 years prior on Veterans Day 1945. At that place six Navy veteran lost their lives in this airplane crash. Two of these veterans were in both World War I and World War II.
Our friend Alan is the guide for this. Although it is a short hike, Fishkill Ridge is a challenge so be advised. Please no beginners. This hike starts from Sunnyside Road in Glenham (Beacon). Parking could be an issue if others are observing the day there, as they almost surely will, be prepared to move cars or perhaps carpool.
Depending on the group and the weather we can do the hike just to the crash site and back, or continue on for a 5.7 mile hike rated difficult, at 4 hours, estimated. Do not quote me.
It is a total loop with a steep up in the beginning and a steep down at the end. My timing is just a guess, especially if we do the extended hike. I estimated for the extended hike. If you just do the crash site it is .75 mile, about an hour each way. Again, not for beginners.
Getting to the crash site is not for beginning hikers and you must have hiking boots and hiking experience. We are doing the short hike rain or shine. Be prepared for wet. The trail is steep with rocks, roots, leaves, and is quite challenging in my opinion. Depending on the day and the group I may only go to the crash site and back down.
Bring water. Dress in layers, bring heavy snacks or light lunch. Hiking boots mandatory. Depending on the day and the group we may dine afterwards.
No Meetup fee. Dogs welcome.
If you send me your cell I will return with mine.
