What we’re about
This group is sponsored by HumanistsMN, which brings together people who, without supernatural beliefs, aspire to lead lives of personal fulfillment and contribute to the greater good of humanity and the planet through reason, science, compassion, and creativity.
If you believe in those principles or are interested in learning about them or want to help others learn about humanism join us for our meetings, events, and social times.
We usually have a regular Humanist Community Gathering on the 3rd Saturday of the month but will send out a reminder to members when the topic/speaker is set (or check the calendar!).
In addition, there are many other smaller meetups during the month.
Meetings are open to anyone who is interested in humanism and wants to meet other humanists. But please considering joining HumanistsMN to help support us financially and build the power of humanism in our society. Join here!

Some of the most important conversations about life begin with death. Let’s come together in courage and mutual support to explore this final frontier which is too-often avoided.
In partnership with First Unitarian Society of Minneapolis (FUS), we are hosting a Death Cafe where we can come together to have an open conversation about death, and our feelings and thoughts associated with it. Comforting food and beverages will be served so that we may savor the sweetness of life as we contemplate death. Rebecca, a Life and Relationship Coach, with a special interest in a well-lived life, including end of life matters, will facilitate the discussion
This event is free. We will have a donation jar available and welcome contributions for the food and beverage costs, as you are able.
This posting is for announcement purposes only: TO RESERVE A SEAT, you need to register by May 31 via this Google signup form
Previous Death Cafes have filled up quickly. You can also sign up at the link above to be notified of future Death Cafes.

- SMART Recovery Support GroupFirst Unitarian Society of Minneapolis, Minneapolis, MN
Looking to beat an addiction? SMART Recovery is a stigma-free and self-empowering secular program serving those with an addictive behavior. This post is for promotional purposes only and no rsvp is required to respect the confidentiality of attendees.
Anyone seeking a secular recovery program is invited to attend our weekly support group sessions -- whether to tackle a particular substance or an activity/process addiction. Participants design and implement their own recovery plan to create a more balanced, purposeful, fulfilling, and meaningful life.
Sessions are led by Kim T., a trained volunteer SMART facilitator, who draws on evidence-based motivational and cognitive behavioral theories. Within a mutually supportive group environment, SMART participants are empowered to develop their ability to:
- Build and maintain motivation
- Cope with urges and cravings
- Manage thoughts, feelings, and behaviors
- Live a balanced life
Whether you are seeking a course of recovery for yourself or have been mandated to attend a recovery program, SMART Recovery provides a path to life beyond addiction.
These sessions are sponsored by HumanistsMN -- a local community of humanists, agnostics, atheists, and freethinkers. - Secular Grief Support Group ONLINE: The Goodbye You Wish You Could Have SaidLink visible for attendees
Sometimes our loss is magnified because we had no opportunity to say goodbye to our loved ones before they died. Death is the great interrupter. A loved one is gone with words left unspoken, intentions unfulfilled, and deeds undone. How do we move through our pain and loss with the unfinished business we had with our loved ones?
In this session, we’ll share our regrets and sadnesses and explore ways to find closure and how to move on. Perhaps to let go, or to find resolution, or to start a new story. We are here to support one another in our journey of grief and loss.
This grief group is for those who have experienced the recent or not-so-recent death of a loved one. It is a peer-led group for people with no belief in a higher power or the afterlife. Participants are invited to speak about their own loss and share their current challenges with grief. We offer no professional grief counseling.
Rather than relying on religious beliefs, Humanists cope with grief in various ways, including finding meaning in our loved one’s impact on ourselves and on others, celebrating their lives through sharing and honoring memories, and sharing our stories of grief and loss. We believe that healing is possible, and that in sharing our grief journeys we become more able to reconcile our loss and move toward better days.
We meet on-line via Zoom on the first Thursday of the month from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Central Time. We hope to see you then!
