The Remains of the Day

For a while now, the words of an odd tune (Hoarseness Is The Whatness) have been stuck with me. I keep finding myself reflecting on their wild claim.T he song goes something like this:

Will someone find out what the word isthat makes the world go round?
Cause I thought it was love.
But some say that it has to be “choice”
I read it in some book, or on an old pack of smokes.

The lyrics end with the dramatic sentence: “You choose or you exist,” followed by a lingering, dreamy melody...
Well, I couldn’t ask for a better voice than that of Stevens, the butler of Darlington Hall, to amplify this contemplation on the weight of choices, their consequences, and how we manage to accept them.
This is arguably Kazuo Ishiguro’s best work and I’m excited to discuss it (or the movie, if you’re feeling lazy) with you all
