Abstract:
Of the world's nearly 8 billion people, nearly 750 million live in places that have no access to an electric grid. In 2010, IEEE launched a humanitarian initiative called IEEE Smart Village (ISV) as part of its 501c3 non-profit mandate to address this issue. ISV provides seed grants of USD 25K-200K to entrepreneurs who are building businesses in parts of the world where there is no electric grid.
The starting point is often solar panels, which power homes, schools and businesses. I will describe how ISV is structured and funded inside of IEEE and the work of some of the incredible entrepreneurs that ISV has supported. And if you are interested in volunteering to work with ISV, I am happy to talk with you.
Bio:
Dr. Ron Bose is an IEEE Life Senior Member. Earlier in his career, he was an editor of IEEE Communications Magazine and served on ComSoc's Board of Governors. He is currently the Treasurer of IEEE Smart Village, where he happily supports the disbursement of funds to deserving entrepreneurs.
He retired from UT Dallas in 2024, where he taught since 2013. Prior to UTD, Ron worked in the telecom industry, including Bell Labs, AT&T, Arthur Andersen, Siemens and Fujitsu.
Ron received his bachelor's in electrical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (Kanpur), master's in systems engineering from Case Western Reserve University and Ph.D. in Operations Research from the University of Texas at Austin. He and his wife live in Plano.
