The Italian Learners Book Club: Il romanzo "L'Arminuta" - Reading #4
Details
Join us as we read the acclaimed Italian novel "L'Arminuta" by Donatella Di Pietrantonio from start to finish. The story of a thirteen-year-old girl who is suddenly returned to her impoverished biological family after being raised in comfort, where she must navigate feelings of abandonment and displacement.
These sessions are designed for Italian language learners at an intermediate level of proficiency (B2). You do not need to purchase the book - we will share a digital copy on-screen during the meeting. We will gather in small breakout rooms, where each participant will read a short section of the text in Italian. We will help each other with comprehension, pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar.
Hope to see you there! Ci vediamo presto!
If you are a native Italian speaker and would like to help our participants with their Italian language skills, please message me on Meetup.

About "L'Arminuta"
Some novels touch such deep, primal chords that they feel as if they are calling us by name. L’Arminuta is one of these books, gripping us from the very first page. We meet the protagonist as she arrives at an unfamiliar door, carrying a suitcase in one hand and a bag of shoes in the other. The door opens to reveal Adriana, her sister, with sleepy eyes and messy braids—a girl she has never seen before.
So begins this powerful, spellbinding story: the tale of a young girl who, overnight, loses everything—a comfortable home, her closest friends, the unconditional love of the people she believed to be her parents. For “L’Arminuta” (the returned one), as her classmates call her, a new and utterly different life begins. The house she enters is small and dark, crowded with siblings and with little food on the table. Yet there is Adriana, who shares her bed, and there is Vincenzo, whose restless, knowing gaze treats her as if she were already a woman. In that gaze, she risks losing herself, only to begin the journey of finding herself again.
