The double entendres I could have used for this description were very tempting and would have had the bonus effect of offending a certain demographic.
But this show is right after the New Year. Every year I try to be on my best behavior for the first few months. This is because I know at some point a member of that certain demographic will text me complaining about how I structured an event. I will genuinely ask if they would like to become an organizer because I feel like diversity is what makes our group great. They will decline because they don't want to do any work, they just want to complain about the work others do. They are privileged, entitled and don't have real problems to whine about. I need to save my naughty points for those moments.
So instead I will tell you a true story.
It was August of 2007 in Chicago. Lollapalooza had been reborn and unfortunately they chose a weekend during a record breaking heat wave. It was so hot the organizers parked half a dozen city buses in the middle of Lincoln Park and you could go sit in their air conditioning for 15 minutes at a time.
I had never heard of G Love and the Special Sauce so the name intrigued me. I wandered to a side stage where I waited until a man in a black three piece suit strolled out with a guitar. He sat down on a folding chair, thanked everyone for standing in the hot sun to watch him and just started jamming.
He was amazing and before the end of the first song the 104 degree temps had sweat streaming off of him. I could literally see it running across his guitar and glistening in the direct sun. There was legitimate concern in the crowd that he was going to have a heat stroke so people started shouting things like "Take your jacket off before you die!"
In the middle of the 4th song, G Love stopped, looked up at the crowd and said "Stop telling me to take my jacket off. That's not how I roll."
Then he went straight back to jamming and I have been a fan ever since.
I will be going to dinner at the Chinese place right down the street so if anyone wants to meet before the show, call/text the DudestJon Help Line at 513-99-HAPPY.
