OUR ROUTE:
We will commence by taking a bus (route 23/24/36) to Hokukuji, where we will explore the bamboo forest and have matcha and sweets at the teahouse.
We will then head towards the Mandarado Yagura Caves, via the Kinubariyama stone quarry, and the “100 views of Mt Fuji viewing spot (関東の富士見百景). Afterwards we will head towards Zushi beach, so please bring your swimwear and a towel if you wish to go in the sea.
Hokukiji
Secluded in the hills of eastern Kamakura, Hokokuji (報国寺) is a small temple of the Rinzai Sect of Zen Buddhism, and was founded during the early years of the Muromachi Period (1333-1573)
Hokokuji is best known for the beautiful, small bamboo grove found behind the temple's main hall, which lies thick with over 2000 dark green bamboo stalks. A few narrow pathways lead through the bamboo to a tea house where, for a small fee, you can sit and enjoy a cup of matcha tea while enjoying views into the bamboo grove. Also located behind the temple are a series of shallow caves carved into the hillsides, which are believed to hold the ashes of some of the later Ashikaga lords.
Kinobariyama stone quarry/caves
Mt. Kinohari is known as one of Kamakura's hiking trails. There is a site of a Kamakura stone strill in the middle of it. If you go along the fork road that is often overlooked on the way to the mountain trail to the top of Mt. Kinohari, it will lead to the ruins of the stone pit. And on the slopes of the mountain surrounded by beautiful nature, a large cave with rock face cut out appears. It is a very quiet space where history and nature are in harmony. The interior is spacious and dark, so you need a flashlight.
Mandarado Yagura Caves
If you’re not afraid of ghosts—or you’d like a taste of ancient Japanese Buddhist spiritual practice—then these somewhat spooky catacombs and final resting place for samurai souls will be your cup of green tea. The Mandarado Yagura Caves are a series of man-made caves originally used as tombs for the samurai class, but now they house stone cenotaphs (empty tombs). The site has previously been excavated to reveal skulls and cremation pits, and the soil has mostly been replaced, but there are information boards with photos explaining the site.

After the event, you may submit a review/evaluation. Please kindly rate appropriately as a low evaluation has an impact on the group. Things you should clearly understand in advance:
- I (Mark) am not a tour guide. For many events this will also be my first time, and events are mainly organised based on intensive internet research.
- Nature cannot be guaranteed, so flower festivals may be impacted by the recent climate.
- We aim to depart on time, however bus schedules might change. This is unavoidable.
- We request participants arrive EARLY. In rare cases we might wait a few minutes if we do not need to take a bus.
- The number of participants is not guaranteed. However we will not have large groups.
- The event finish time might be earlier or later than advertised. The hiking time might be longer/shorter than anticipated. Return bus times are not guaranteed.
