Event-Driven Microservices & AI Agents: Spring Boot, Kafka, Kotlin & MCP
Details
Please note - this meeting will be held on a Tuesday (November 11).
This meeting will feature two talks:
- Headline Talk: Building Event-Driven Microservices with Spring Boot, Apache Kafka and Kotlin, with Sandon Jacobs
Spring and Kafka already play nicely together, so you can keep using the Spring ecosystem you know while getting the benefits of event-driven architecture. In this session we’ll build a Kotlin-based service that produces and consumes Kafka events using Spring Kafka, connect it to a Kafka cluster (e.g. Confluent Cloud), and use structured data with Apache Avro and a schema registry. By the end, you’ll see how Kotlin fits as a first-class language in Spring and how to spin up event-driven services without extra ceremony. - Lightning Talk: Building Model Context Protocols (MCPs) for AI Agents, with David Fekke:
This presentation will focus on creating Model Context Protocols (MCPs) for AI Agents. Anthropic recently introduced MCPs as a method to provide additional context to AI agents using large language models. I will also demonstrate how easily these services can be integrated using Java, Node.js or just about any other language.
Speaker Bio: Sandon Jacobs
Sandon Jacobs is a Developer Advocate at Confluent, based in Raleigh, NC. Sandon has two decades of experience designing and building applications, primarily on the JVM. His data streaming journey began while building data pipelines for real-time bidding on mobile advertising exchanges—and Apache Kafka was the platform to meet that need. Later work in television media and the energy sector included Kafka Streams, Kafka Connect, and provisioning Kafka infrastructure with various infrastructure as code frameworks.
Speaker Bio: David Fekke
David Fekke is an application architect with over 25 years of experience building web and mobile applications. He is a frequent speaker at different technology groups in Jacksonville and is a Commercial pilot and former flight instructor. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautical Science from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
