🇬🇧 Software with no assumptions by Jarsto van Santen (DUO)
When you assume, you make an ass out of you and me. When you assume while developing software, you might make an ass out of the software. To assume is human, so we can never fully escape our assumptions. If we needed any more proof we got it last year when February 29th – a date which comes around once every four years – managed to cause all sorts of software problems.
It might not be realistic to aim to eliminate assumptions entirely. But we can learn from other people’s assumptions, there are plenty of practical examples out there after all. These range from classic assumptions about the length of a year, to the modern assumption that LLMs actually do what they claim to be doing. All of us can probably recall last year’s CrowdStrike problems, which seemed to shutdown half the globe, and some of us might also recall the first ever Ariana V launch exploding. But did you know both incidents were fundamentally caused by the same assumptions about the software?
The examples might not all be applicable in your own work, but you should leave with a sharper focus on assumptions and whether they might be endangering the quality of the software you’re working on.
🇬🇧 Builds and less logging by Robert Scholte (Java Champion)
We are all familiar with the console output of our build tools.
Maybe verbose, but verify informative, right?
Most of us don't care and are happy if everything is green.
So why write things if nobody reads it?
During this session we'll use Maven, but the same kind of changes can be applied for any other buildtool.
About the speakers
Jarsto van Santen has been playing with code for a quarter of a century now, having started at 11 years old. Despite studying law he eventually saw sense and turned his hobby into a career. He now works as a Specialist Test Engineer at DUO.
Robert Scholte is a developer advocate, sharing his knowledge regarding Apache Maven and Java development. He is a former chairman of the Maven project and has had this role for over 5 years. Robert was a member of the expert group for the specification of the Java Module System as introduced in Java 9. Robert has spoken on international conferences inspiring people about the usage of Maven and Java.
🎂 Anniversary Special
To celebrate our first year together, we’ll add something extra festive to the evening. Expect good talks, good food, and good company — with a birthday twist!
