Film of the month:
[?]* (Directed by Jeff Nichols, 2016; 2h 3m; FSK: ab 6)
Many a tale has been told of star-crossed lovers. Sometimes, the forces that would keep two people apart are soundly defeated. Mildred and Richard Loving were a “colored” woman and a white man from rural Virginia whose interracial marriage in 1958 was deemed a crime according to the state’s laws. They were compelled to leave Virginia and were only allowed to visit their families separately. Living in Washington, D.C., they longed to return home. Soon after the “March on Washington” led by Dr. Martin Luther King, their case was taken up by the American Civil Liberties Union and fought all the way to the Supreme Court — successfully overturning “anti-miscegenation” laws throughout the nation. Starring Ruth Negga, Joel Edgerton, Marton Csokas, Nick Kroll and Terri Abney.
“A story well told and a brief, believable window into the lives of Richard and Mildred Loving, two people who changed the country just by falling in love.”
– Brian Tallerico, RogerEbert[dot]com
“A true story that is still very relevant, [?]* is understated, compelling and deeply affecting.”
– Claudia Puig, The Asahi Shimbun GLOBE
“[?]*is a welcome reminder that things can get better.”
– Olly Richards, NME (New Musical Express)
