Libations and Lectures is where professors, filmmakers, and storytellers present thought-provoking lectures about film at various Charlotte locations (restaurants, coffee shops, bars, cooperatives, etc.) From Cinephiles to foodies, students to adults; everyone can participate. Just come thirsty and hungry for knowledge.

Speakers – Framing the South: Tim Grant & A.J. Riggins in Conversation

Tim Grant is a director and producer from southern Appalachia. His filmmaking explores economic, religious and cultural tensions of the American South, often through portraiture. As a director, Tim’s short documentary The Aria of Babyface Cauliflower Brown (2017) premiered internationally at Hot Docs Film Festival and was selected by The New York Times’ Op-Docs series. His award-winning feature debut Mississippi River Styx (2023) was Executive Produced by Danny McBride, David Gordon Green and Jody Hill and premiered at Big Sky Documentary Film Festival. As a producer, his films include Finders Keepers (2015), J. Cole Forest Hills Drive: Homecoming (2016), Out of Omaha (2018), The Passing On (2020) and The Bitter Pill, which premiered at the 2024 Full Frame Documentary Film Festival.

A.J. Riggins is an award-winning filmmaker and producer from North Carolina, passionate about exploring the intricate family dynamics of the American South. His short films have been showcased at various film festivals and supported by the arts organizations of North Carolina. A.J. ‘s documentary, “BEAUTIFUL COFFEE,” won the 2022 PRWeek Corporate-Branded Film of the Year. His collection of projects, “THE WORLD OF TOINE,” explores the complexity of Southern family dynamics and provides the foundation for his feature screenplay, “LOOK AT TOINE.” He is a 2024 screenwriter fellow of the Antigravity Academy Screenwriters Camp and Incubator. A.J. holds an MFA from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, School of Filmmaking.
