What we’re about
This is an inclusive LGBTQIA group for gay men and women and their friends who are interested in hiking and other outdoor sports in and around Lisbon. We have male and female co-organisers and encourage participation from anyone who identifies as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, etc. Allies and those supportive of our communities are also welcome.
We are a very international group, so the official group language is English, but all events are published in Portuguese as well as English and we are very glad to have many Portuguese members.
All skill levels are welcome and most events are manageable by someone with a routine levels of fitness. Generally we are more of 'a social group that hikes', rather than 'a hiking group that is social' :-). However, some of our organisers sometimes plan longer and/or more challenging hikes, so please be sure to read All the information on an event page before signing on.
Events are usually limited to a Max. 30 or 35 attendees. This is to facilitate social interaction, make groups manageable, and enable us to use public transport (getting large groups onto a single bus is not always feasible). If an event appears to be full up please always join the Waiting List, as people often drop out in the last day before an event, and people on the Waiting List are automatically transferred to the Going List.
Let's explore the outdoors walking, running, cycling... together!
(N.B. Before uploading any photos to this site or its associated Facebook page, please be certain that you have permission from everyone who is featured in those photos).
Important*:* We do not conduct "guided events". The hikes provide a group environment for independent hikers who remain responsible for themselves at all times. Event pages provide all necessary transport details, maps and other information sufficient for attendees to act independently.
Hike coordinators are NOT responsible for trail conditions or safety. They are not trained in first aid and do not carry a first aid kit. When you hike with this group, you are responsible for yourself. Plan to be self sufficient, carry your own supplies, appropriate gear for the weather, water and food etc.
(During the Covid pandemic we continued to run outdoor events within Health Service rulings, with careful planning, limited group sizes and avoiding crowded public transport. We encourage everyone to be vaccinated and to not attend a group event if they have symptoms. - Let's look after each other.
When the virus situation and restrictions allowed, we increased the frequency of events to two, or three, events a month in response to restrictions on group sizes, but when the maximum group possible was below ten people we postponed events until the situation improved.
Portugal Hiking LGBTQ* continued, flourished and provided great social and exercise opportunities throughout the pandemic, and where restrictions temporarily stopped us we focussed on planning new events.
Thanks to everyone who continued to participate safely and sensibly through those difficult days.
Your co-organisers, Alex, Lidiia, Bianca, Bianca, & Miguel.
