What we’re about
Welcome to "Yet Another Hiking Group in Luxembourg"!
Please read all of the below carefully before you apply to become a group member.
What is YAHGIL about?
This group is about hiking in Luxembourg.
- Most times REALLY in Luxembourg, but sometimes in the surrounding countries, like Belgium, France, or Germany.
- Most times it is ONLY about hiking, but sometimes it may include picnics, swimming, or barbecue.
- Most times it will not rain, we promise! And if it does, we apologize in advance, but we will hike anyway :)
- Most times it will be brisk walks between 15 and 20km, but sometimes it can be just a light promenade. In winter it might be sometimes too cold for more than 10km.
Who can apply?
Everyone passionate about hiking is welcome.
If you are not trained at all, you might consider not joining the hard ones first, but once in a while there will be hikes suitable for beginners, just read the description for each event carefully.
We are dog-friendly, and if your dog is friendly with people and other dogs, feel free to bring it along!
We expect a "clearly recognizable profile photo", to keep fakes and spammers out.
If there is any reason for not having such a photo, let's talk about it. Send us a message if your application was rejected or not answered, and make sure that we can reply, check your mailbox settings.
Who are we?
The group owner has been hiking in Luxembourg and the greater region since early 2019. Over time, several co-organizers have joined and we're able to organize hikes almost every weekend, unless all of us are out of town at the same time.
If you're interested in organizing hikes as well, let us know, and you may become an organizer in the group
What are we looking for?
We look for beautiful routes, new ones to explore, and the best ones to be repeated occasionally.
And we're looking for nice people to join us, good discussions during the hikes, but also enjoying the silence and the sound of nature.
If you happen to know a beautiful route, we're always open for suggestions, but be aware that we cannot consider every idea and we cannot promise if and when we go somewhere.
What do we expect from you?
- Be on time if possible, and if you're late, let us know immediately. There is some tolerance and we wait for you if we know you're coming, but don't let it become a habit
- Unsubscribe as soon as you know you can't make it, even if it is 5 minutes before or after the official start of the event, it makes checking the participant list much easier and your spot can be taken by someone from the waiting-list.
- Use public transport if we provide information about it, or the carpool to be eco-friendly and reduce the amount of cars that are used
Member contribution
While the membership in MeetUp is free for normal users like you, the group owners have to pay a subscription, which has constantly increased over the years.
I have set up a fundraiser on GoFundMe with the fictitious goal of "1 EUR per group member", and you can contribute whatever you feel comfortable with.
Be it 1 EUR per year, 1 EUR per hike, or 1 EUR per km (just kidding).
Let me know if the link doesn't work or you need to use a different way, like Payconiq or cash.
It's completely voluntary, but it helps a lot to cover the MeetUp subscription and all the small things that add up during the year.
Final remarks
There are comprehensive charters existing in other groups, with dozens of rules, but we try to get around it without that, although most of the listed points absolutely make sense and they are valid here as well, but without the need to state it. Our group, our rules.
The necessary legal minimum to claim:
"All Events are at your own risk, there is no liability by the hosts for any damage. Also, each participant is responsible for respecting the sanitary measures that might be in place at the particular moment, like distance and mask-wearing."
If you made it here, congratulations!
Welcome to YAGHIL, we're looking forward to hiking with you!
Cheers,
Jens.

See all- 🇩🇪 [GERMANY MONTH] - Wasserbillig to Trier hike v2 [24km] 🇩🇪Wasserbillig Train Station, Wasserbillig
This trail is now part of our Germany hiking series. Starting from Wasserbillig, continuing our road through the vineyards of Igel we will walk along limestone cliffs or past the Grutenhäuschen to the Richardshöhe and enjoy the panoramic view over the Mosel and Sauer.
This is the second variation to hike from Wasserbillig to Trier on the Igel side. We did the Oberbillig, Konz, Trier variation last time, that was a lot more difficult than this one. Here there will be one climb at the beginning then we stay uphill until Trier, there will be only small ups and downs.
Making a reverse hike to Trier makes more sense as there is just more things to do there:
We all need some (cheap) hiking gear usually, sticks, backpack, water bottles, sunglasses, headlights and in Luxembourg there isn't any particularly good place to buy them either. Trier offers a large variety of stores where you can buy these for cheap:
Also many nice bars and restaurants, ideal to finish off our hike with.
The trail: https://www.alltrails.com/explore/recording/evening-hike-fe131d7-99
On our way we can also check out the forest occupation where youngsters are blocking the construction of the Moselsteig.
Distance wise expect something between 23-25km for the whole trail.
Start time: 11:02 Wasserbilig, take the fast train leaving GC at 10:33, those who are coming with car can also leave it here and come back with the train at the end of the hike
End time: 17:00 Trier downtown, we will not rush this hike, just dedicate your whole afternoon for it. No lunch break planned, please eat before the hike, we can have dinner somewhere in town after
🥨🌭🍻 August is GERMANY month. 🥨🌭🍻
We are going to discover some of the best trails of Rheiland-Pfalz and Saarland 🏞️. The paths lead us through mystical deciduous and coniferous forests as well as deep valleys with rugged rocks on which imposing castles tower steadfastly over mighty river bends. In the tranquil wine villages and small hamlets along the way, fun-loving and hospitable people await us, who will be happy to give us a warm welcome.
Since there are a lot of great trails in the area but the month is relatively short there might be a hike both days of the weekends to accommodate both causal and seasoned hikers :
Saturdays : long/more exhaustive hikes
Sundays : short relaxing hikes... Sunday strolls
Aug 15/16/17 : Assumption day, I'm off so as most of the people there will be NO hike 😐August is one of those warm months when a little rain shower won't hurt us so the planned hikes will be kept regardless of bad weather ⛈️ , the state of Deutsche Bahn 🚄 (we take replacement buses) or how many signs up.
This leaves us with 10 great hiking trails. The order is NOT fix yet, only the hikes posted are guaranteed to be kept:
- Aug 2 SAT 🗼 Saarburg to Saarchleife Custom Megatrail (38km)
- Aug 3 SUN 🏰 Mettlach Besseringen - Sankt Gangolf - Montclair (10km) with possible extension to the observation point
- Aug 9 SAT 🛍️ Wasserbillig to Trier shopping hike (24km)
- Aug 10 SUN 🥓 Oberbillig Summer BBQ party (12km)
- Aug 19 SAT 🏞️ Itzenplitzer Pingenpfad (will be extended to 2x 15km)
- Aug 20 SUN 🌄 Römerpfad merged hikes (12km)
- Aug 23 SAT 🌉 Geierlayschleife (Geierlayloop) Premium Hiking Trail (7x3km will be extended)
- Aug 24 SUN 🥞 Saarburg Pancake Loop (13km)
- Aug 30 SAT 🍇 Mehring Zitronenkrämerkreuz (20km)
- Aug 31 SUN 🌻 Vom Leukbachtal auf den Kruterberg with some extension (15km) + Saarburg burg visit
Those who are familiar with this area know, that one of the best hiking area nearby, the Teufelsschlucht 🦕 is left out. The reason for this is that we can always walk over there from Echternach, matter of fact we can do this in September and with it we conclude the Germany hikes for 2025.
All the hikes are REACHABLE WITH PUBLIC TRANSPORT. Highly recommended that even if you only participate in 2 hikes buy the Deutschland ticket in advance (you will get ROI multiple times). Help is provided on the webpage at the bottom.
These are joint hikes 3 groups together + Trier Group + since the events are listed in Germany expect local visitors, the number of RSVPs may not reflect the actual group size.
Keep in mind: SUNDAY everything is closed in Germany (aside from bars/restaurants/some gas stations), make sure you bring enough food and drinks for the day
August is one of the months with the longest days fortunately, the last light is around 22:00 🌙 in this region, therefore we don't have to start any hike super early, except the first.
What to bring (this goes for all these hikes):
- At least 2l water
- Hiking sticks
- Hiking boots
- Snacks, food
- ID card (as we go into another country)
- Sun cream, sunglasses, hat
- Coming in long pants is highly recommended as we are going through dense forest areas and it is tick season 🪲

This is not a guided hike. All participants are expected to have some hiking experience and must assess their own fitness and ability to complete the route safely. - 🇩🇪 [GERMANY MONTH] - Oberbillig Summer BBQ party [12km] 🇩🇪Kreuz Konz, Konz
Amid dappled sunlight and whispering pines, the grill’s ♨️ smoky warmth and laughter rise into the treetops—a forest feast where nature and flavor meet in perfect harmony.🥓🥩🍗🍖
We rarely have hiker BBQs so it's time for it, we have benchmarked a very nice and easy scenic hiking trail starting from Konz ending at Oberbillig last time, why not connect it with grilling deep in the forest far away from the noisy highways and cities. 🌲 🏞️ If this place works out we can also use it for the yearly Halloween night hike 🎃.

This route was reduced to accommodate even the most novice hikers. 12km with 400m elevation gain, anyone can do it. We will walk 9km until the Grillhutte + 3km after we finished.
The Grillhutte must be rented for BBQs and as half of August was already reserved, I was kind enough to reserve it for us for Aug 10 Sunday, between 12:00-16:00. I made a deal with the owner to also provide us with some wood so we don't have to bother with it. This is a paid event, everybody who is coming are willing to contribute to our cause.
Overall this will cost us about 100 EUR / divide this with the amount of participants coming for the hike, over 10 ppl it won't break anybodies bank. This is a bring your own food type of BBQ, you need to bring your own meat/vegetables/drinks with you from Lux (it is a Sunday, everything will be closed in Germany). We could use 1 person with car who is interested in the BBQ but willing to give up the hike to help us. I won't make a carpool for this as the rest are recommended to come with the train, just pm me if you can assist. Nevertheless this will not be a constraint, if there is no driver we will carry all the food and drinks up there, it will be a good exercise. Otherwise the plan is, we all meet at the Kreuz-Konz train station, everybody can hand over all drinks/food/plates etc to the driver.
The ferry operates until 5:50 PM on Sunday. No need to look for schedule, it literally comes and goes in every 15 minutes. Bring 1 EUR cash for the ferry, otherwise instead of Oberbillig the boatmen will take you to hell. 😈
Start time: 11:12 Kreuz Konz station, take the fast train from Gare Central, leaving at 10:33. Upon arriving if we have a driver we will hand over all the food and drinks for him/her and go on with our short hike. With 4km/h pace we will arrive around 13:00 which leaves us with 3 hours of bbq time.
End time: around 16:00 we finish the grill, pack up and make our way down to the ferry, we don't need to rush as the last 3km can be easily done under an hour (it's all downhill), we will have plenty of time to catch a ferry back to Lux. Those who would like to stay a bit longer for couple of extra beers can do so at my favorite place with outdoor terrace on the other side, Cafe Qeens.
I will not set an RSVP limit for the event, this place is bigger than it looks on the pictures, there are tables and benches enough for about 30 ppl. Please only sign up if you are planning to participate. I will make an update of the weather as usual before the event but we will keep it even in case of rain ⛈️ as the fireplace is covered.
