Title:
Are you prepared? Lessons from Disaster Recover Planning
Abstract:
When people think about cyber security incidents, the focus is often on prevention, detection and incident response. But what happens after the incident? Could your organisation actually recover, and how long would it take?
This talk shares practical lessons learned while coordinating disaster recovery planning work within a large and complex government environment. It explores what disaster recovery plans (DRPs) are, how they relate to business continuity and incident response, and why they are far more than just documentation or compliance exercises.
Through real-world examples and discoveries uncovered during DRP activities, the session will explore the often hidden challenges and assumptions that can make recovery far more difficult than organisations expect, and why having backups alone does not necessarily mean an organisation is prepared to recover.
It will also discuss how tested recovery capability can improve confidence, reduce chaos during major incidents, and strengthen broader cyber resilience efforts, particularly in the context of ransomware, outages and operational disruption.
