Meetup Albany is your place to meet new people, create new friends and discover great things to do in Albany. You can join an event that interests you, or if there is something you would like to do that isn't happening become a host and make it happen. The team at Meetup Albany will support and train you about how to create an event that is friendly and welcoming for people to connect with and share.
People + Fun = connections and we, at Meetup Albany, want to help everyone in Albany to feel connected and a part of the community through your shared passions and interests. It is one way we, the team, can be warriors against loneliness.
Your Meet Up administration team is made up of people from the Albany Regional Volunteer Service, the City of Albany Community Development and Rainbow Coast Neighbourhood Centre. Together we will help you get the most out of your experience on Meetup.

(Join us for an open, casual morning of philosophical discussion. No prior philosophy experience required — just an open mind, a respectful attitude, and a willingness to both question and be questioned.)- What is power?
- Who holds it? Who is the target?
- How should power be used?
- Can we control how power operates?
THOUGHT-STARTERS
Here is how three radically different thinkers view the architecture of power. (Feel free to use these as templates, do your own research, or test them against the rise of modern leaders like Trump, Putin, or Netanyahu!)👑 NICCOLÒ MACHIAVELLI (The Sovereign Tool)
- Core View: A centralised tool wielded top-down by the state or a ruler to maintain strict social control.
- How it Operates: Repression and strategy. It is enforced through calculated laws, cunning, fear, and raw dominance.
- Locus of Power: Centralised entirely within the State and the Prince.
- Morality: Divorced. Morality is a political liability; a ruler must learn how not to be good to survive.
🕸️ MICHEL FOUCAULT (The Invisible Web)
- Core View: A diffuse network. It is a bottom-up, relational web woven directly into our everyday language, institutions, and habits.
- How it Operates: Production and normalisation. It works by defining what society accepts as "truth" and creating self-regulating citizens.
- Locus of Power: Everywhere — embedded silently within schools, prisons, hospitals, and social expectations.
- Morality: Constructed. "Truth" and moral codes are simply systems manufactured by power networks to maintain control.
🕊️ SUSAN NEIMAN (The Ethical Imperative)
- Core View: A moral resource. Power must be intentionally tethered to ethical ideals, reason, and the public good.
- How it Operates: Individual agency and collective ideals. It functions through human choices, moral clarity, and the courage to change society.
- Locus of Power: Rooted deeply within individual conscience and the collective will of the people.
- Morality: Bound. Power stripped of moral ideals is just hollow cynicism; it must always aim for the way the world ought to be.
