Snowshoeing Adventure in Estes Park – Bear Lake to Emerald Lake

Join us for a fun and scenic snowshoeing adventure in Rocky Mountain National Park! This trip is open to all levels, whether you’re brand new to snowshoeing or more experienced.

We’ll meet at the Estes Park Visitor Center parking lot in Estes Park and carpool/caravan/shuttle up to the Bear Lake Trailhead, one of the park’s most popular winter spots. From there, we’ll do a loop around Bear Lake before making our way past Nymph Lake, Dream Lake, and finally Emerald Lake.

📍 [Route Details]:

  • Distance: ~3.6 miles round trip
  • Elevation Gain: ~700 feet
  • Trail Type: Out-and-back with short loop option
  • AllTrails Link

This trail offers some of the most stunning alpine lake views in winter, with frozen waterfalls, snow-covered peaks, and plenty of opportunities for photos along the way.

🚗 Car Recommendations/Park Pass:
The drive up to Bear Lake involves a paved mountain road. While it’s usually well-maintained, in snowy conditions you’ll want all-wheel drive (AWD) or 4WD, and winter tires are highly recommended. Carpooling is encouraged since parking can be limited at the trailhead.

Park Pass REQUIRED: (Buy Online or In Person)

🥾Gear Rental/Recommendation:

  • Snowshoes sized for your weight + pack; flotation for deeper snow helps.
  • Poles with snow baskets to help with balance and reduce fatigue.
  • Insulated, waterproof boots with good tread + ankle support.
  • Layers: moisture-wicking base, insulating mid layer, outer waterproof/windproof shell.
  • Microspikes or traction devices as backup, especially if parts of the trail are icy.
  • Accessories: warm hat, good gloves or mittens, extra socks, gaiters, sunglasses & sunscreen, water + snacks.
