The University of Melbourne Symphony Orchestra perform masterpieces by Mahler and Ginastera and a world premiere by Australian composer Melody Eötvös.
This September, The University of Melbourne Symphony Orchestra embarks on an international tour that begins with this performance at Hamer Hall, Arts Centre Melbourne, before concerts in Singapore in Malaysia.
Mahler once said that “a symphony must be like the world: it must encompass everything” and his Symphony No. 1 certainly achieves just that! One can hear birdsong alongside military trumpet calls (as a youth he lived between forest and a military barracks). An Austrian waltz and a funeral march follow, and in the final movement the music takes the audience from Hell to Heaven.
In the first half we will hear a stunningly beautiful new work, Hun Tur, especially commissioned for this tour and composed by the Conservatorium’s Melody Eötvös, and Ginastera’s incredibly virtuosic Piano Concerto No. 1, featuring soloist Timothy Kan.
