Join me for a big-screen night with one of the most influential films ever made. Cinema Nova is screening Stanley Kubrick's fully restored 2001: A Space Odyssey as part of their Movie Epics season, and it's the kind of film that really does deserve a proper cinema rather than a laptop.

We'll meet at the Cinema Nova ticket booth at 6:00pm on Thursday 3 September for a quick hello, then wander out for a casual bite along Lygon Street before heading in. The film starts at 7:00pm and runs 149 minutes, and Cinema Nova notes this screening is presented without an intermission, so grab your snacks and a bathroom stop beforehand.

This is a casual social meetup so we can go along together — it isn't run by, affiliated with, or endorsed by Cinema Nova. Please book your own ticket directly with them; an RSVP here doesn't include entry.

Who this is for

  • Anyone who loves classic cinema, sci-fi, or has simply never seen this one on a big screen
  • People happy to chat before and after the film (the film itself is a quiet, no-talking affair)
  • Rated G, and no film knowledge required — newcomers very welcome
  • Coming on your own? Perfect. Plenty of people do, and you'll be made welcome

Tickets / cost

  • Book and pay for your own ticket directly with Cinema Nova using the booking link above
  • Seats are allocated. I'm booked in Cinema 3, seat H-12, so grab something nearby if you'd like to sit with the group — row H or the rows either side of it are your best bet
  • Book early if you want a seat close by, and feel free to comment with your seat number so we know where everyone is
  • Dinner is at your own cost

Transport

  • Cinema Nova is at 380 Lygon Street, Carlton, an easy walk from Melbourne Central or the top of the CBD
  • Trams along Swanston Street and route 1/6 stops nearby put you a short walk away
  • Street parking on and around Lygon Street is metered and can be tight on a Thursday evening — public transport is the easier option

Bring

  • Your booked ticket (phone or printed)
  • A jumper or jacket — cinemas run cool
  • Cash or card for dinner and snacks

Expect

  • Difficulty: none — it's a night at the movies
  • Pace: relaxed
  • Vibe: friendly, low-key, film-loving
  • Group style: casual, come as you are, solo attendees welcome

Important notes

  • Please book your own ticket in advance — a Meetup RSVP is not a ticket and doesn't guarantee entry
  • This is an independent social meetup, not organised by or affiliated with Cinema Nova
  • The 6:00pm meet is short and informal — if you're running late, go straight to your seat and find us afterwards
  • No intermission, so sort out food, drinks and bathroom before 7:00pm
  • Session times and availability are set by Cinema Nova and can change; please check the booking page
  • If your plans change, please update your RSVP so numbers stay clear

Other info
We'll gather briefly outside after the credits for anyone who wants to talk about what they just watched — no pressure if you'd rather head straight off.
