Awesome Canyon
Details
Rating: Moderate to strenuous, 6 miles and 1300 feet of climbing. Some steep angled sandstone, but the skill level required is only moderate. Lots and lots of difficult, tiring, and awesome terrain.
This hike is in conjunction with Red Rock Hiking.
----
The hiking route is just outside Snow Canyon near St. George. It's a sometimes strenuous 6 mile cross-country loop hike, with 2 miles of sandy flats and 4 miles climbing on the rocks. Much of the loop has very spectacular scenery, brooding down on the great red void of Snow Canyon, unreachable far, far below. It's pretty cool.
Be aware that this hike takes 5-7 hours and is quite tiring, with lots of strenuous leg work and plenty of arm work too.
Along the way we'll visit a fine but little known rock art panel.
Some portions of the route are sketchy with steep slopes and occasional loose rocks. Many spots require some agility on the slanted rocks, and while it's not technically too hard for most, nearby exposures to dangerous drops can be a bit scary.
Prep: Two water bottles. Sunglasses, due to the bright white rock. Sturdy gloves are recommended due to the abrasive sandstone. A hiking pole is nice on the steep climbs and descents but not really needed.
Meet: We will be meeting at the Chuckwalla Trailhead at 9am, and then drive about 7 miles up Rt 18 to the actual trailhead, alongside the highway in a big pullout.
See you there! M+J :)
