Yoga Vinyasa Krama Foundations - Thursdays 9-10:30am
Soft Medicine Sanctuary - Loft
Yoga Vinyasa Krama is a comprehensive hatha-raja yogic system for purification, developing concentration, neuromuscular fitness and conditioning, mastering the breath, awakening subtle energy and stilling the mind. Based on deep breathing & the subtle movement of prana directed into the cartilage tissue, sinuous musculature, internal organs, nerve pathways and nadis. It has over 900 intelligently sequenced slow, conscious breath powered with precision movement variations with pause (vinyasas), exploring many aesthetic variations of each posture to correctly establish the main asanas while the mind merges with the breath. Includes drishti, pratikriyas, bandha, vaseth, mudra, mantra, surya & ding namaskar with breath & mantra, cleansing kriyas, Himalayan pranayama including including ujjayi variations, heating & cooling breaths, solar, lunar & soli-lunar nadi shuddhi practices, pranava & samantraka pranayama, pratyahara, subtle & contemplative practices in 12 kramas (sequences).
The whole process gradually transforms the body and mind, releasing old patterns of physical and mental tension and dysfunctional patterns of movement, providing tonic, energetic and psychophysiological effects. This system is presented from the teachings Srivatsa Ramaswami learned through his over 33 years of one on one study with Sri Krishnamacharya and a similar Himalayan method.

Foundations will mostly focus on the first krama, Talasana (aka Tadasana), ding namaskar, and important mudra, morning kriyas and pranayama. Practiced with the two feet together in Tadasana-Samasthiti, Talasana initiates balance & stability, outward & inward focus by grounding and moving from our center - exercising the spine, all major muscles, joints, and muscles of respiration, massaging the internal organs - using hasta vinyasas (arm and hand movements), back bends, side bends, twists, forward bends, squats and balancing foot stretches. Ding Namaskara is a devotional salutation honoring the guradians of the directional spheres, invoking their protection and blessings.
