Whether native or nonnative, plant survival depends on a suitable environment. We will learn about the 6 factors of the abiotic environment that determine plant growth and survival. These site-specific environmental factors must be considered when deciding what to plant.
Rita L. Hummel is an Emeritus Professor of Environmental Horticulture from Washington State University. Before her retirement, she taught an Interior Plantscaping course via distance education to WSU students in Pullman, Puyallup, Spokane, the Tri-Cities and Wenatchee. She conducted research and extension education on nursery, greenhouse and landscape plants including: the development of recycled organic materials as substrates and nutrient sources for container production and landscape use; the determination of plant adaptation to rain gardens under Pacific Northwest environmental conditions; the development of propagation and production practices for beargrass and madrone; and the improvement of tree and shrub longevity in the landscape by preventing root structural defects. Rita has authored numerous research, cooperative extension, and popular publications. She has a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota and was a faculty member at the University of Florida. Rita was the 2009 Washington State Nursery and Landscape Association’s Educator of the Year, served on the Journal of Environmental Horticulture Editorial Board and is an enthusiastic home gardener and member of the WNPS South Sound Chapter.
