Historically, the Pismo Beach Monarch Butterfly Grove has been one of the best places to observe and photograph monarch butterflies. The current population count is still quite low, so this is a valuable opportunity to get out and document them while we can. Consider experimenting with new compositions such as backlighting, capturing butterflies in flight or mating, or exploring fresh macro perspectives.
Beyond the grove, there are additional wildlife photography opportunities just a short walk away near the beach, along the creek, and throughout the dunes and surrounding trees.
We’ll meet just inside the main entrance for brief introductions, questions, and optional guidance. I’ll be happy to offer suggestions on camera settings, compositions, and shooting approaches for anyone who would like assistance.

Gear: I recommend bringing a tripod, a long lens or a long zoom, and a short distance lens or zoom like a 70-200 or even a macro lens. There will be low light in many spots, so fast lenses help.

I hope to see many of you there, especially new members, as we kick off the year with a visit to this iconic landmark of the central coast.
