Details

Let’s meet at Tuxedo Station at 10:30am and hike on the Ramapo-Dunderberg Trail (red dot) to Tom Jones Mountain in Harriman State Park. Serene forest, cool rock formations, and one of nine Harriman lean-to shelters at the top :)

This is a longer, strenuous hike with steep sections and rocky terrain. Not ideal for beginners and best suited for those with previous hiking experience.

Total distance from the station is about 8 miles and 1800 feet elevation gain out-and-back.

We’re aiming for a pace of 1.5-2mph which should put the hike at roughly 4-7 hours, depending on conditions. If you’re returning to the city by train the best two options are the 4:20pm or _6:44pm_departures. Plan for a full-day adventure :)

Please note that as the trail continues deeper into the forest, it becomes less maintained with increased overgrowth. I’d recommend wearing long pants and a long-sleeved shirt to help protect against brush and ticks.

Train: I recommend taking the 8:53, 9:07 or 9:11 AM train from Penn Station to Secaucus Junction. In my experience, weekend trains are often delayed or run slower than scheduled, so it’s helpful to have a buffer.

Transfer at Secaucus Junction for the 9:30am train to Port Jervis.

The 9:14am train is the latest possible option from Penn Station, however if it is delayed, you risk missing the 9:30am transfer to Port Jervis.

If driving by car, please meet us at the Tuxedo train station at 10:30am.

Wear sturdy hiking shoes/boots with good traction. Brings layers suitable for the weather. Bring 2-3 liters of water, electrolytes, lunch and snacks, sunscreen, bug repellent, personal first aid, headlamp.
