Our August event for 2018 is on at 6:30pm, Thursday, August 2nd, 2018.

This month we warmly welcome Dr Boyd Murray. Throughout his career, Dr Boyd Murray, has worked almost entirely on research and design of wireless systems including aircraft MLS (Microwave Landing Systems) for Interscan International, cellular mobile telephone networks for Optus, microwave point-to-point radio equipment for AWA-Plessey, and MIMO OFDM Wireless LANs for CSIRO. Dr Murray is now the founder & principal consultant of Murray Wireless, working in consulting, design, implementation & deployment in the IoT & Wireless industries.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is the next big thing in the wireless revolution. It is a natural evolution of the Internet and, as the name suggests, goes beyond the connection of people to the Internet by connecting 'things' such as computers, machines, & sensors. The use of Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWANs) as the communications medium makes for a 'killer app' which will explode onto the world in millions of applications and implementations over the next decade. This talk will cover: * Which Wireless network is best for your IoT Application?

  • Cellular LTE: Cat-0, Cat-1 or Cat-M1, Cat-M2 (NB-IoT)?
  • Proprietary: SigFox, LoraWAN, Taggle, others?
  • Comparison of business models.
  • Comparison of range vs. data rate vs power consumption.
  • Drawbacks: Security, full/half-duplex, etc.

As usual, outside the main event there will be a news recap, plus plenty of opportunity to talk business and tech with like-minded folk from the local area. Feel free to bring up a drink from the bar downstairs or even order a meal from the restaurant, plus there'll be free finger food after the talks. All are welcome, but please RSVP so we can get the catering right.
