At our November meeting, we will be discussing “The Sweetness of Water" by Nathan Harris.

Please bring along a suggestion of a festive-themed queer book to the meeting, we will then choose one of these for our December read.

About this month's book:

Landry and Prentiss are two brothers born into slavery, finally freed as the American Civil War draws to its bitter close. Cast into the world without a penny to their names, their only hope is to find work in a society that still views them with nothing but intolerance.

Farmer George Walker and his wife Isabelle are reeling from a loss that has shaken them to their core. After a chance encounter, they agree to employ the brothers on their land, and slowly the tentative bonds of trust begin to blossom between the strangers.

Parallel to their story runs a forbidden romance between two Confederate soldiers. The young men, recently returned from the war, hold their trysts in the woods. But when their secret is discovered, the ensuing scandal and violence unleash devastating and far-reaching repercussions that threaten the entire community—and the delicate peace the brothers and the Walkers have begun to build.

About QWord:

QWord is a book group for local LGBTQIA people, run by QStory Northampton. We read and discuss literature with queer themes and/or written by LGBTQIA authors. The group was originally founded in 2011 and came under the QStory umbrella in 2021. We meet monthly and read a wide range of books, including novels, short stories, graphic novels and poetry, chosen by our members. New members are always welcome and you don’t need to be an experienced literary critic to come along!
