Gathland State Park to Weverton Cliffs: MD AT (Rating: A)

Please join me on this lovely out-and-back hike on the Appalachian Trail in Maryland, 11.8 miles with 1660 feet of total elevation gain. The weather looks more inviting for Friday with a high of only 82, although there is a 50% chance of showers, mostly in the afternoon. The hike will begin at Gathland State Park near Burkittsville, MD and follow the AT south along South Mountain to Weaverton Cliffs. We will begin hiking at 9:00.

There are no steep, sustained climbs on this hike, just a lot of rolling ups and downs, as well as some rocky sections. We will have an early-ish lunch at the spectacular Weaverton Cliffs overlook, and then retrace our steps back to our cars.

We will hike at an average moving pace of 2.5-3.0 miles per hour and stop at all intersections. The restroom facilities at the trailhead have not been open lately, but there is a porta-potty. There is no park fee.
