Meet the Expert - Mike Maiocoo

Join the California Writers Club OC for this new mixer series called "Meet the Expert," where an expert shares their field experience and brings inspiration to writers aiming to incorporate the topic into their stories!

Our first expert is Mike Maiocoo. Mike has accumulated over 57,000 hours of investigations experience conducting crime scene investigations and was the lead crime scene investigator on over 150 homicide cases. Mike has testified in court as an expert witness in federal, state, and juvenile courts and is a P.O.S.T. certified trainer teaching officer for Involved Shooting, Burglary, and Sexual Assault courses throughout the state.

He's also a tenure instructor at Santa Ana College, teaching criminal justice, crime scene investigation, and death investigation courses; he began his teaching career as an adjunct instructor at Westwood College. Mike has mentored several students and was involved in overseeing the intern program of the Crime Scene Unit.

Mike has authored and co-authored several books, including CSI: Beyond the Yellow Tape (a textbook and workbook), and Bloodshed Chronicles (short stories highlighting cases Mike has worked). In 2026, Mike is taking on a new adventure; he's acquired Police and Fire Publishing, a company that has published a variety of textbooks, including the Mexican Mafia Encyclopedia.
