Short story meetup: Contemporary Japanese fiction
Details
Welcome to our March short story & social meetup! This month, our selections are curated by book club member Craig. As he describes it, "the themes linking the stories by these 3 contemporary female Japanese writers are bodies and identity, isolation in daily life, and the surreal lurking in the ordinary."
You can read the stories here:
- "A First-Rate Material" by Sayaka Murata: https://philosophy.williams.edu/files/A-First-Rate-Material.pdf
- "The Lonesome Bodybuilder" by Yukiko Motoya: https://electricliterature.com/alexandra-kleeman-recommends-the-lonesome-bodybuilder-by-yukiko-motoya/
- "Afternoon at the Bakery" by Yoko Ogawa: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1r7RODf18opUndxTfLJs7NGL-soYwkNVL/view?usp=drive_link
Note: The last file above is password protected. To access it, use the password: Oslo
If you don't have time to read all three stories, feel free to just read as much as you can!
This meetup will take place in person at Bristol Pub in downtown Oslo. They serve a large selection of drinks and offer both snacks and food.
We hope to see you there!
