Blydenburgh/Stump Pond Devastation Exploration hike - 6.5 mi.

Details
PLEASE READ THIS DESCRIPTION!
This is an easy to moderate 6.5 mile loop trail hike around the Stump Pond at Blydenburgh County Park in Smithtown.
Last November we did an out and back hike on only one side of the trail because we weren't sure we could get around the entire pond after last August's environmental disaster. Now we know we can, so this time we'll be doing "The Whole Enchilada."
We will be hiking through the woods over winding trails that can often be "rooty" and occasionally hilly, so shoes with good treads are recommended . We will traverse bridges and boardwalks, pass by running streams and take in some interesting points of interest.
Unfortunately, as we traverse the trail and look to our right through all the beauty of the springtime foliage, we will see the sad devastation of the once beautiful Stump Pond. Last August, after 10 inches of torrential downpours, the dam burst and collapsed emptying millions of gallons of water into the Nissequogue River. This catastrophe almost completely left the pond empty. This was a true environmental disaster.
***IMPORTANT!!!
PARKING: We will NOT be entering the park through the main entrance. We will be parking in the neighborhood near the northeast tip of the pond on Brooksite Dr.
