What we’re about
Looking to get in shape? Want to be a part of a team sport? Interested in meeting a diverse and fun group of new friends? Join Living Root Dragon Boat. We are always looking for new members.
We are a competitive Boston-based dragon boat team. We're made up of about 60 to 80 people from all genders, races, age groups, and smartness levels. We get together several times a week to practice dragon boating. We compete all over the region and traveled to Canada, China, Puerto Rico, Philadelphia, Florida and San Francisco.
Off the water, we are a close group of friends and we like to do stuff! All kinds of stuff!! Teamwork is really important to us and we try really hard to integrate new paddlers into the team. If you're new to the area, dragon boat is a great way to meet people and make friends. If you've been in Boston for years and you're tired of your old friends, we can help freshen up your social life.
What to Expect When you Show Up
The first three practices are free to allow for you to try out the sport and meet the team; there is no obligation or pressure to join at that time! We’ll provide all the gear and the coaching and all the socializing you could ever want. After the trial period, we hope you’ll continue your journey with us by purchasing an annual membership since the team’s gear, boats, and space fees (such as pool rental) depend on these contributions.
We practice twice a week, and we're always looking for new people to come paddle with us. No experience necessary! Our excellent coaches will teach you everything you need to know. If you are in good shape, we will work you out! If you are still trying to get in shape, don’t worry, many of our current team members started where you are. We will make you bad ass. Inquire about membership on our website or ask a coach.
Please sign our waiver before attending your first practice.

Come join Living Root Dragon Boat as we paddle in the Mystic River Water Association (MyRWA) Pride Flotilla on Saturday June 28th from 11 am to 1 pm in the Mystic River in support of the LGBTQ+ community. We took part in the Pride Flotilla last year and are excited to be a part of this event this year. We will meet at our practice site at Rivergreen Park in Everett, MA and paddle over to join the flotilla by 12pm. We will join the celebration at Blessing of the Bay in Somerville before paddling back to the dock.
Are you new to paddling? No problem! We'll show you everything you need to know to paddle on a dragon boat. This is a great way to meet people, get in shape, and do something fun in the sun (or rain!). Our team is a social and friendly co-ed group that enjoys being on the water, getting a workout, and competing in races all over the country.
We paddle rain or shine, so dress for the weather. Wear comfortable workout clothing and footwear that you don't mind getting wet. Bring a bottle of water, and we'll provide all the paddling equipment you'll need and a place to lock up your belongings. We often head out for a quick bite to eat after practice. So come join us!
