Raccoon Ridge, Coppermine AT Loop (difficult)
Details
Look out over the upper Delaware Valley from the Kittatinny Mountain on this stretch of the Appalachian Trail. The valley here is peaceful and has changed little over the centuries. The upper Delaware River runs through a protected corridor from the water gap to its bend at Port Jervis, the result of the failed Tocks Island Dam project. We'll climb the Kaiser and Coppermine Trails starting from the national recreation area This hike has mountaintop views, streams, waterfalls, an old copper mine and lots of rocks.
Meet up at 10:00am in the Kaiser Trail trailhead parking lot along Old Mine Road in the Delaware Water Gap National Rec. Area/Worthington State Forest (41.03021, -75.03915). The old Coppermine Trail parking lot is CLOSED. Make sure to arrive on time as once we start the hike I will not be able to check my phone.
This hike is a more difficult 8 mile loop with around 1300 feet of elevation gain. The climb can be strenuous at points and the trail is quite rocky for long stretches. Be prepared for this level of exertion. Make sure to wear appropriate footwear for the trail. As always make sure to bring water and some extra calories. Be prepared to hike into the early afternoon.
Hike will cancel from severe weather.
