Alchemy, and the search for the Philosophers Stone
“The true alchemists do not change lead into gold; they change the world into words.”
― William H. Gass, A Temple of Texts
"Alchemy was a system of speculative thought and practice that aimed to purify, mature, and perfect materials to create gold from base metals, find a universal cure for diseases, and discover a way to prolong life. It was an ancient tradition that combined mystical, spiritual, and primitive chemical practices, and it served as an ancestor to modern chemistry, with many alchemists like Isaac Newton and Robert Boyle also being early scientists"

Alchemy is something that in our modern times is perhaps looked at as somewhat archaic and steeped in superstition and mysticism, and looked upon at best as a pseudo science.
Though from a philosophical and historical perspective it marks an important transition in the development of our beliefs moving from the supernatural and superstitious to a more science based ideology, perhaps forming the base of modern science, scientific and natural philosophy and modern medicine.
In this dinner and discussion we will be exploring,
- The core tenets and beliefs around Alchemy
- How it has informed our way of thinking now
- What did it evolve out of
- And what benefits it may hold for our modern world
If your interested in exploring the philosophy and practice of Alchemy and its influence on our development as a society, and what it might mean for us from a philosophical point of view come along on the 29 Oct at 6pm for what is always a deep and enjoyable discussion on philosophical matters in a relevant modern way.
