"Reflections on Identity"

"Cogito, ergo sum", "I think, therefore I am" one of the most famous quotes ever uttered in philosophy, by Rene Descartes as the first principle of his philosophy. It has also for the most part become a fundamental element of Western Philosophy, with the principle of while other knowledge could be a figment of imagination, deception, or mistake, Descartes asserted that the very act of doubting one's own existence served—at minimum—as proof of the reality of one's own mind; there must be a thinking entity—in this case the self—for there to be a thought.

But is it true, it is well known that individuals who have extended time in solitary confinement or absence from human contact, or some existential challenge that they can lose their very sense of reality and themselves, their Identity, lose their very minds?

In this discussion we will be doing a deep dive into Rene Descartes Philosophies, the nature of Identity, and diving deeper into such questions as;

  • Is our Persona, Identity just a reflection/accumalation of other human beings
  • Could we survive psychologically without other human contact and what would our Identity be?
  • Is our Identity a limiting factor in what we could be, or have we already surpassed it.
  • Is it possible to live without Identification?

If your interested in exploring this fundamental classical philosophical Idea and what it might mean for us from a philosophical point of view come along on the Tues 17th February at 6pm to the Goodwood Hotel "The Goody" for what is always a deep and enjoyable discussion on philosophical matters in a relevant modern way.
