Dinner and discussion: "Socrates - The Socratic Method"
Details
"Socrates - The Socratic Method"
"An unexamined life is a life not worth living"
Socrates
This meeting we go back to the roots of Philosophy and the beginning of Philosophy as a school of thought that was based on critical thinking rather that mixed with the divine or the world based on the whims of the gods on that particular day.
Though there were many philosophers previous to Socrates, Socrates is often hailed as the father of Western Philosophy, where by his method of questioning he was able to take apart is dissect ideas and arguments that people and often populations have taken for granted and challenge there utility of ideas often held erroneously created on little substantiative fact. It is a method that has held the test of time and is still popular today.
Amongst other things Socrates was know for his other philosophical ideas
- The Unexamined Life: Socrates taught that "the unexamined life is not worth living", meaning people must question their daily habits, values, and beliefs to live a meaningful existence.
- Socratic Ignorance: He famously stated that true wisdom is knowing that you know nothing. Admitting ignorance is the first step to real learning.
- Virtue as Knowledge: He believed that virtue is a form of knowledge and that no one does evil on purpose. Wrongdoing comes from ignorance of what is truly good.
- Care of the Soul: Cultivating a good, virtuous soul matters more than wealth, power, or physical appearance.
In this meeting we will be exploring Socrates life and philosophy's and his eventual passing in dramatic circumstance and the circumstances and factors involved.
I look forward to seeing you and sharing your wisdom as we explore this interesting subject.
