What we’re about
Going to the movies used to be a thing I did by myself. But lately I've rediscovered how much fun it is to go with friends and to talk about it with them afterwards. So, here we are!
Providence Movie Club is a group where we'll go to a movie and then grab a drink after it's over to hang out and chat. I'm pretty omnivorous with my movie taste, so one week we could see something at the Avon, and the next be front and center at Morbius. Post-movie will change as well and hit bars, coffee shops, breweries, boba tea places, etc.
Don't worry about being a film expert or anything. I imagine conversations will go like most book clubs where you talk about the book for seven minutes and then everyone drops it.
See you at the movies!

Ask E. Jean with NewportFILM
Avon Cinema, 260 Thayer Street, Providence, RI, USHow long has it been since we've been at the Avon? [checks notes] Eek! Oldboy and TIzzy K's, September 12, 2023! Don't get mad at me. They don't schedule things more than a week in advance. It's hard to plan with them. Anyway, the real news is that we're partnering with our friends at NewportFILM for a joint event at the Avon!
Movie Club will hold a pre-movie social at a location by Thayer St. NewportFILM's events manager and I are in the midst of finalizing a place. Maybe Flatbread Company? I'll post in here once it's locked down. Then, we'll walk to the Avon for the 7:00pm screening of Ask E. Jean. Afterwards, there'll be a post-film conversation with the film's director and cinematographer, moderated by Bill Bartholomew.
Ask E. Jean is the thrilling story of E. Jean Carroll’s life, from her early days as Miss Cheerleader USA to her rise as a trailblazing journalist, author, and beloved advice columnist. Carroll broke barriers as the first female editor at Esquire, Playboy, and Outside, helping to redefine women’s roles in media with her sharp wit and fearless voice. In recent years, she reignited public discourse by standing up to power, becoming the only woman to beat Donald Trump twice in court, and sparking a national conversation about truth, accountability, and resilience. This film is a portrait of an indomitable woman who proved it’s never too late to reclaim your voice, rewrite your story, and change the world.
So join us on Thursday, November 13th for:
5:45pm - Pre-movie social (NewportFILM will be there to showcase the cool things they're doing.)
7:00pm - Screening of Ask E. Jean at the Avon
After the movie - A moderated post-film conversation in the theaterWhile the pre-movie hang is free, the screening itself is $15. You can buy tickets ahead of time here: https://newportfilm.com/films/ask-e-jean/
I think that's all for now. Thanks to NewportFILM for reaching out!

Movie Song Karaoke at The Dusty Planet
The Dusty Planet, 39 Troy Street, Providence, RI, USAll of us had so much fun at the last Movie Song Karaoke event in August that I thought it'd be a good idea to make it a recurring event. So we're heading back to The Dusty Planet for another edition of Movie Song Karaoke!
The event will start at The Dusty Planet at 7:00pm on Friday, November 21st. The event ends at 11:00pm. All of this is pretty casual. If you want to sing a song, there's an app where you can put your song in and also see the queue. This is an event open to the public, but if you're coming for Movie Club, try to stay on theme and sing a song from a movie. Basically if it's used in a movie, it's fair game.
The Dusty Planet will also have a Secret Song. If the Secret Song is sung, the singer gets two free rounds of golf. There will be trivia about the Secret Song throughout the night to help with solving it. And I'll probably also do a Movie Club Secret Song with attached prize. Sooo two ways to win that night!
The bar sells concessions such as candy, chips, snacks, and soft drinks, alongside a rotating menu of beer, wine and canned cocktails. It's also nice because if you're not really into karaoke, they have a few arcade cabinets/pinball machines and a 9-hole miniature golf course to indulge in.
Hope to see you there!

Castle in the Sky at The Space
The Space, 171 Chestnut St, Suite 200, Providence, RI, USFor a while now, AS220 has been the home for our own Movie Club screenings. And it's great and nothing's going to change, but sometimes it's hard to get through and get something scheduled. So I've been keeping my eyes open for other places. This one in Providence recently opened. I saw a comedy show there, and it was a cute, cozy space! From their website: "The Space in Providence is a queer-led, matriarch-inspired, creative collective offering low-cost rentals, shared promotions, and an invitation to build something different; together." We've been in conversation about it possibly being a place for our screenings, and now I can finally announce the first one!
Join us on Friday, December 5th for a 7:00pm screening of Castle in the Sky at The Space. Doors open at 6:45pm, and we'll start the movie around 7:00ish. For anyone interested, we'll probably go someplace afterwards to keep the night going. Programming note: unfortunately, like the Black Box, this is a flat room. Because of that, I'll play the dub so people don't have to worry about being able to see subtitles.
Castle in the Sky is a 1986 Japanese animated fantasy adventure film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki. In the film, orphans Sheeta and Pazu are pursued by government agent Muska, the army, and a group of pirates. They seek Sheeta's crystal necklace, the key to accessing Laputa, a legendary flying castle hosting advanced technology.
This may or may not be a ticketed event. I'm still deciding. But if it is, tickets won't be more than $5. Feel free to drop a comment if you get lost or have any questions. The Space is located at 171 Chestnut St, Suite 200, Providence, Rhode Island 02903.
