What we’re about
Going to the movies used to be a thing I did by myself. But lately I've rediscovered how much fun it is to go with friends and to talk about it with them afterwards. So, here we are!
Providence Movie Club is a group where we'll go to a movie and then grab a drink after it's over to hang out and chat. I'm pretty omnivorous with my movie taste, so one week we could see something at the Avon, and the next be front and center at Morbius. Post-movie will change as well and hit bars, coffee shops, breweries, boba tea places, etc.
Don't worry about being a film expert or anything. I imagine conversations will go like most book clubs where you talk about the book for seven minutes and then everyone drops it.
See you at the movies!
Upcoming events (3)
See all- Movie Song Karaoke at The Dusty PlanetThe Dusty Planet, Providence, RI
Movie song karaoke is something a few others and I have been thinking about for a while now. Since we weren't able to get an AS220 screening in for August, I figured now is the perfect time to do it! Normally I do karaoke at my beloved Boombox, but recently I went to a karaoke night at the newly-opened The Dusty Planet and had a great time. It's nice because if you're not really into karaoke, they have a few arcade cabinets/pinball machines and a 9-hole miniature golf course to indulge in.
The event will start at The Dusty Planet at 7:00pm on Friday, August 15th. The event ends at 11:00pm. All of this will be pretty casual. If you want to sing a song, go up to the counter and request it. This is an event open to the public, but if you're coming for Movie Club, try to stay on theme and sing a song from a movie. Basically if it's used in a movie, it's fair game.
The Dusty Planet will also have a Secret Song. If the Secret Song is sung, the singer gets two free rounds of golf. There will be trivia about the Secret Song throughout the night to help with solving it. And I think I might also do a Movie Club Secret Song with attached prize. Sooo two ways to win that night!
The bar sells concessions such as candy, chips and more snacks and soft drinks alongside a rotating menu of beer, wine and canned cocktails. I think that's it. Hope to see you there!
- Movie Club Mixer at Hot ClubHot Club, Providence, RI
Another Movie Club mixer, another iconic Providence institution. Join us in August for our next mixer at Hot Club! I love this line from Hot Club's website: "Everybody in Rhode Island’s got a story about a great night at The Hot Club." And if you don't already, now you will! There are a few areas where we could set up shop, so on the day of, I'll make a comment on here letting everyone know where we'll be at.
The mixers are a great way to familiarize yourself more with the group and its members. As a reminder, there is no pre-movie portion, only the socializing part. Old members, new members, and anyone who has wanted to check out the group is welcome!
The event will start at Hot Club at 7:00pm on Wednesday, August 20th. It'll go on as long as people are around, though the official end time will be 10:00pm. I'll have a pile of name tags on a table for everyone to help differentiate who's there for the mixer and who's just there. Hot Club has alcoholic and non-alcoholic options, as well as a bunch of delicious food available.
Hope to see you there!

This is the second year that local bookstore/bar Riffraff has played movies outside in their courtyard. I've never been to any of their screenings, but my dear Movie Club comrade assures me that it's a quality experience. Toward the end of August, they're playing David Lynch's Mulholland Drive. While this is a title I'd been saving for a special occasion, I think it's the perfect opportunity for us to finally check out Movies in the Courtyard.
In Mulholland Drive, blonde Betty Elms has only just arrived in Hollywood to become a movie star when she meets an enigmatic brunette with amnesia. Meanwhile, as the two set off to solve the second woman’s identity, filmmaker Adam Kesher runs into ominous trouble while casting his latest project.
Join us on Friday, August 29th for an outdoors screening of Mulholland Drive at Riffraff. The movie starts at 8:30pm, but we should meet at Riffraff at 7:30pm (or a little earlier) for pre-movie socializing and to all grab a spot together. On the day of, I'll put in the comments where we're at. This is a free event, and Riffraff will have snacks and drinks for sale, as well as an outdoor bar.
They won't have seats, though, so it's up to you to provide your own chair or blanket. Drop a comment if you have any questions!
