Teaching Tech Things To Non Tech People
by Sabrina Seaver
Sooner or later, you’ll need to explain a technical concept to someone who doesn’t speak “tech.” It might be a junior developer, a stakeholder, a client, or a friend who’s just getting started, or maybe even me.
As Perth recruiter Douglas Robertson puts it, “You are hired to your level of communication.” Knowing something isn’t the same as being able to teach it.
In this ten minute talk, I’ll share practical steps to make technical ideas stick: how to engage your learner, connect new concepts to what they already know, get them doing instead of just watching, and help them when they get stuck — all without overwhelming or confusing them.
Sabrina is a former teacher turned data analyst. She enjoys gardening and riding her bike.
