Starting from quantum optimization techniques such as QAOA for portfolio selection, we examine their limitations in capturing real-world market behavior. We then introduce Quantum Reservoir Computing (QRC) as a promising near-term paradigm for modeling nonlinear and chaotic time-series data. By leveraging quantum dynamics as a feature extraction mechanism, QRC enables more expressive representations of financial systems without requiring complex training procedures. The talk also presents a novel approach to integrating financial domain knowledge into quantum models by using covariance structures to inform reservoir design.
