Group Guidelines

Attendance
Goal for this group is to create the best possible experience for active members. That means securing a spot for those who plan to read the book and attend the discussion. For this reason, members are expected to keep their RSVPs updated at all times. Frequent no-shows or those who repeatedly change their RSVP at the last minute may be moved to the waitlist or removed from the group.

Dues
Meetup charges $350 per year to run and maintain this group. To help offset this cost, members are encouraged to contribute. Members dues are $5 per year or $1 per meetup. Dues are collected in person or online.

Code of Conduct
The Raleigh-Durham Brain Pickings Book Club is dedicated to providing a community where all people are accepted, regardless of sex, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, age, body size, race, nationality, or religious beliefs. Members are expected to be respectful of other member's opinions, even if they do not agree with them. We do not tolerate harassment of members in any form. Members violating these rules may be removed from the group at the discretion of the organizers.

• Volunteer to lead a discussion, recommend a book (from the Brain Pickings reading list (or any book from an author on the reading list), or suggest a venue.
• Note that many of these meetups fill up quickly. Don't get discouraged. If you're on the waitlist, it's likely a spot will open up for you at some point. If you're still waitlisted by the time the event rolls around, please message the organizer for permission to attend – but do this only if you plan to come, please.

Is a River Alive? by Robert Macfarlane

Starbucks, 3800 Lake Boone Trail, Raleigh, nc, US

Let's read Is a River Alive? by Robert Macfarlane described by The Marginalian as "...a portal of a book, lucid and luminous, hinged on something particular and urgent (the rights of nature movement) but (because this is Robert Macfarlane) opening into the deepest recesses of the existential and the timeless: the measure and meaning of being alive."

Intrigued? Read more below, and RSVP to join us for the discussion on November 22!

Is a River Alive? is a joyful, mind-expanding exploration of an ancient, urgent idea: that rivers are living beings who should be recognized as such in imagination and law.

Macfarlane takes readers on three unforgettable journeys teeming with extraordinary people, stories, and places: to the miraculous cloud-forests and mountain streams of Ecuador, to the wounded creeks and lagoons of India, and to the spectacular wild rivers of Canada―imperiled respectively by mining, pollution, and dams. Braiding these journeys is the life story of the fragile chalk stream a mile from Macfarlane’s house, a stream who flows through his own years and days.
