How to Read Philosophy (Workshop)

Details

This workshop will draw on ancient philosophical pedagogy, Mortimer Adler's classic How to Read a Book, and the latest in cognitive science for better comprehension, retention, and enjoyment of your next book!

Format: Lecture (20min)
Zach will share insights from

  • Mortimer Adler’s How to Read a Book
  • Bloom's Taxonomy
  • The Socratic Dialogue
  • Close Analysis
  • The Method of Loci
  • Mnemonics
  • Spaced Repetition
  • The Feynman Technique
  • His own personal reading journey

Workshop (40min)
We will break into small discussion groups

  • First, we will practice reading a couple of aphorisms and philosophical passages together using the techniques discussed.
  • Next, everyone will share their our own personal reading strategies with the group
  • Finally, we will all come together to share takeaways

My hope is that by the end of the hour we will all walk away with new strategies to get the most out of our next book.

Can’t wait!
Zach
