Hello everyone!
What a year it's been! Before we say goodbye to 2020, we want to present you with one more event. Let's wrap this year up with another online and global event!

Inclusive user experiences are crucial, and to make this happen we need user research to also be inclusive. This time we're focussing on the accessibility side of inclusion. We are excited to have two brilliant talks lined up for you - Jenni and Ali from Humanly who will do a double act, and Tim from Hi Mum! Said Dad. They will each share their experiences of conducting inclusive research, along with helpful guidance.

Don't forget to BYOB and snacks! Talks will be 20 mins +5 mins questions each. Engage with our speakers by asking lots of questions after each talk!

Thanks to Zebra People (https://zebrapeople.com/) for sponsoring The Research Thing. And thanks to UXPA UK (https://uxpa-uk.org/) for supporting us with making this an online event.

THE TALKS

  1. Jenni Parker & Ali Fawkes - from Humanly (@designhumanly)
Designing with and for people with learning disabilities
Humanly has worked on a number of projects that aim to improve the experiences of people with learning disabilities. To do so we have developed a unique methodology for designing with and for people with learning disabilities that is fun, engaging and empowering for participants. We have continuously iterated on our methodology based on what has worked and what hasn't worked, leading to pivotal insights about how to engage people with learning disabilities in a truly meaningful way. This practical talk will include guidance on the do's and don'ts of effectively involving people with learning disabilities in research activities. You will find out how our work led to the development of Daybook, a digital diary that was co-created and tested with people with learning disabilities, and how you too can design with and for people with learning disabilities.

Jenni (@jenniparker57) is the founder and director of Humanly, a design studio specialising in human-centred design for social impact. She is passionate about the power of human-centred design to develop solutions to some of the world's most pressing problems, and to transform the organisations that are at the front line of addressing these challenges.

Ali (@ali_fawkes) is a Social Innovation Consultant at Humanly. She is an expert communicator who specialises in designing creative and inclusive approaches to research, co-creation and prototyping. During Ali’s diverse career she has worked as a teacher in specialist schools; at the national charity VoiceAbility and as Asperger's Syndrome Project Officer at the University of Cambridge.

2) Tim Smith - from Hi Mum! Said Dad
Design vs. Human Behaviour
Have you ever wondered why door handles are shaped the way they are? Or why so many train station platforms are inaccessible to wheelchair users? In his talk 'Design vs. Human Behaviour', Tim will be discussing his experience with accessibility design and his observations around how and why design can sometimes fight against us as people. Tim will also cover his work with people with disabilities, referring to real world examples from his career working within the auto and mobility industry, specifically with autonomous vehicles for the likes of Volkswagen and Google.

Tim (@mypoorbrain) is Design & Experience Director at digital product and innovation consultancy Hi Mum! Said Dad, and a member of the board of directors at Wayfindr, a not for profit startup that is developing an open source audio-based platform aimed at helping millions of people with a vision impairment navigate their environment independently.
