Many Truths, One Machine & Foundation Models in Science...
What Shapes the Future of AI?

After our deep dive into RAG & AI Agents, we’re back in October with two thought-provoking perspectives on the role of artificial intelligence in science and society.

On October 9, 2025, we’ll explore how Generative AI shapes our understanding of reality and where foundation models truly fit into the natural sciences.
Expect fresh insights, honest questions, and a critical discussion of the current state of AI.

### Agenda

18:00 – Welcome & Networking (snacks and drinks provided)
18:30 – Talks begin
20:00 – Get together
📅 Date & Time: Thursday, October 9, 2025 | 18:00 – 21:00
📍 Location: HMS Analytical Software GmbH, Grüne Meile 29, 69115 Heidelberg

### Our Speakers

👉 Julian Kurz (Lead Machine Learning Engineer, HMS)
“Many Truths, One Machine: Generative AI and the Shape of Our Reality”
Generative AI thrills us with its apparent creativity, then disappoints us when it falls short of our expectations. But this cycle of hype and letdown says less about the technology than about ourselves. What captivates us is not that AI is alien, but that it feels eerily familiar: like us, it lives in context, where truth is multiple, shifting, and never absolute. From Buddhist emptiness to the uncertainties of quantum physics, we have always wrestled with the discomfort of a world that resists fixed meaning. Generative AI doesn’t just mimic intelligence—it reflects back the fragile, contextual nature of our own, reminding us why we both celebrate and fear it.

"Foundation Models in Natural Sciences"
We've all seen generative AI create art and write prose from a simple prompt. But what happens when we turn this powerful technology inward, applying it to the fundamental code of life itself? In this talk I will explore the revolutionary impact of foundation models on natural sciences and structural biology in particular, moving beyond the hype to showcase real-world breakthroughs. We will look at the 1D sequence of amino acids to the complex 3D machinery of life, exploring how models like Nobel Prize winner AlphaFold “solved” the 50-year-old "protein folding problem". We'll then look at the next frontier: generative models that don't just predict nature's designs but allow us to create entirely novel proteins and materials from scratch. Finally, we will discuss the broader implications of these transformative technologies in our everyday lives.
